I was delighted to undertake a really interesting and prestigious commission recently, to design and create a series of 14 awards for the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce's annual business awards, known as the 'Norther Star Awards'

The awards celebrate some of Aberdeenshire's great local business achievements in a range of categories, from customer service and international business to excellence in health and safety, procurement, and best advertising campaign.

The award presentation evening is held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference centre, and it was the first time I've attended anything like this- great to see so many people from the local area, find out about what they have been up to, and see some familiar faces from the local business community!

This blog will look at the creation of the awards from start to finish, and show some of the photos from the evening itself...

While working on some illustration work, I was contacted around March by an executive from the North East & Grampian Chamber of Commerce who had seen my work at Gallery 121, and were interested in looking at the idea of creating a bespoke award for the upcoming Norther Star Business Awards, held at AECC in October...

-

After meeting with the team, and seeing some of the previous awards, I was able to find out more about the requirements- each year the Chamber commissions a different local artist to create a selection of awards, which go to the winners of the various categories, and capture something of the feel of the local area and industry.

-

At the first meeting I brought along an Aberdeen Cityscape sculpture, which is in the new engraved perspex and oak format like the above picture. As there were to be a total of 13 awards, which were to be presented on the night, it became obvious that a smaller design that capture some more industrial references might be better, and so my task was set!

Coming up with the Design

-

Having decided upon a finished size of around 470mm wide, the main task was to create an engraving design which would capture elements from the City, the Shire, and the local fishing and oil industries- this was quite a lot to include in a piece which is around half the normal size of my city sculptures! It took a bit of time to plan it out but eventually I came up with something which I felt covered all the elements that were to be represented, and summed up the awards... Here is the plan layout I made along with a visual mockup:

With the designs completed and everything approved, the next step was to set about creating the awards, which was quite time consuming for all 13, but they came out really nicely, and I put just as much attention to detail into each piece as if I were making 13 unique one-off commissions for 13 demanding clients- which in a way I was!

-

With everything completed and ready to go, it was time to deliver the awards and get final preparations under way for the awards ceremony...
